Urban post‐industrial landscapes have unrealized ecological potential

چکیده

Urbanized and post‐industrial sites often host considerable biodiversity but are too frequently dismissed by conservation professionals, in part because current species assemblages differ from the site's natural history. Given dramatic irreversible changes to these sites, we conclude that historic ecosystems do not provide a useful reference for restoration. However, seen through novel ecosystem lens, landscapes already have value thus require nuanced restoration planning recognizes their potential community composition. We highlight slag‐dominated brownfields of Calumet region as an example landscape may serve both recreational area humans refuge native biodiversity.

Can urban areas have ecological integrity ?

INTRODUCTION The question of whether urban areas can offer a semblance of the natural world – a vestige (at least) of ecological integrity – is an important one to many people who live in these areas. As more and more of the world becomes urbanized, this question becomes highly relevant to the broader mission of maintaining the Earth’s biological diversity. Most people, especially when young, a...

The Application of Ecological Principles to Urban and Urbanizing Landscapes

gene sequencers through advanced computers and networking to global-observing satellites-coupled with keen scientific curiosity present an opportunity for unprecedented advances. Together, we can make ecological science a mainstay of sustainability. While pursuing that goal, we need to ensure that our best efforts are made available to society along the way. The time of science remaining in its...

Tissue culture: the unrealized potential

Lack of differentiated functions of the tissue of origin in tissue culture thought to be due to dedifferentiation was shown to be due to selective overgrowth of fibroblasts. Enrichment culture techniques, (alternate animal and culture passage), designed to give the functionally differentiated cells selective advantage over the fibroblasts resulted in a large number of functionally differentiate...

The Unrealized Potential of the Internet

The role of the Internet in teaching and research has been given too little attention in mathematics education, particularly in developing countries and underserved segments of the population of developed countries. Those with inadequate Internet connectivity lack access to the research of others and experience difficulty in achieving recognition for their own work. Exchange of ideas in their f...

the Unrealized Potential of Computer-Aided Drafting

A B S T R A C T Despite huge investments by vendors and users, CAD productivity remains disappointing. Our analysis of realworld CAD usage shows that even after many years of experience, users tend to use suboptimal strategies to perform complex CAD tasks. Additionally, some of these strategies have a marked resemblance to manual drafting techniques. Although this phenomenon has been previously...
